Work toward the adoption of consistent regulations governing labeling
ICGA globally advocates a uniform and consistent approach to labeling and nutrition labeling of chewing gum products, taking into consideration the limited labeling space available on chewing gum packages.
Maintain early warning systems in all major global regions
Through its members and staff, ICGA maintains contact with, and reports on developments relating to food regulatory developments in all regions, including the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. ICGA’s Secretariat has offices in Washington, D.C., Brussels, and Shanghai for on-the-ground capability to handle issues wherever they arise.
Advocate consistent regulation of gum base
ICGA is uniquely positioned to advocate consistent regulation of gum base, which typically is regulated at the national level. Wherever proposals to change these regulations arise, ICGA is there to respond with up-to-date ingredient information and supporting science so that gum base regulations globally remain largely consistent.
Seek promulgation of regulations authorizing health claims for chewing gum
ICGA has spearheaded efforts in Europe and the United States to gain regulatory approval of health claims associating the consumption of sugar-free chewing gum with dental health. There are currently 5 authorized health claims in Europe relating to chewing gum and dental health, and 1 in the United States. ICGA will continue the process of gaining authorization for such claims as national and regional health claims approval procedures are developed.
Address industry issues relating to responsible disposal of chewing gum
ICGA believes that, while improper disposal of chewing gum is a matter of individual behavior, the industry must explore opportunities to educate the public on the importance of proper disposal. ICGA participates globally on behalf of the industry in a number of programs and dialogs aimed at effectively addressing this important environmental issue.
